pengantins, beware!

The terrible story of the missing-in-action wedding vendor pretty much exploded all over social media this morning but in case you haven't seen or heard...

Enchanted Weddings is back at it again.

Conversation between the photographer and the bride, reproduced with permission.

You can also read more about the latest incident here or see pictures posted by the groom himself here or his video here.

I first wrote about this rogue wedding vendor here, and even took the trouble to scan, resize and upload the Berita Harian article written about them in my blog entry earlier this year.

I figured - hard copy of the newspaper article gets thrown and forgotten a few days after, right? But an online copy of it stays forever and can be read by people who search for reviews on Enchanted Weddings online even after the initial fuss is over, right?

Apparently, and sadly, it seems like that is not how it works.

A common question that many have asked is this: Why is this happening again? What can be done to prevent this from happening again? How is it possible for Enchanted Weddings to do nasty again when their bad reputation has been splashed all over the news less than a year earlier? How is it possible for them to get clients? Don't people know the previous stories?

I don't really know the exact reason for this but I can only harbour a few guesses:

(1) Orang malas nak research. Never mind that a wedding is a big and special day for most pengantins. Never mind that a wedding involves tens and thousands of hard-earned dollars. Never mind that most of us in this country have access to the Internet, where information on almost every damn thing in the world is readily available. Orang just malas nak research. Seriously, all you need to do is do a Google search on Enchanted Weddings and all the bad reviews on them are contained within the first few hits. You don't even need to find and sit in front of a computer to do this. All you need is a smartphone or a tablet with working 3G/4G/Wifi and it can be done while on the go. The technology is there. Use it.

(2) Orang tak baca Berita Harian - their past incidences were already reported in Berita Harian earlier this year, on a two-page full spread article no less, but since some people don't bother reading the newspapers, the story might not have reached them.

(3) Orang masih boleh book them kat wedding exhibitions - Selagi exhibition organizers don't take a step towards actively filtering vendors with notorious reputations, selagi tu unsuspecting couples and their families will be exposed to the risk of mistakenly engaging them. Most people visit wedding exhibitions with the belief that the vendors participating in them are honest and legit - and 99.9% of them are honest and legit - but what happens when couples run into that 0.01% dishonest vendor? Once they put in their deposit, put in their payments and put in their faith up until the big day itself, there really is no point of turning back. Of course the onus is on the couples themselves to research about the vendors before committing (refer to Point No. 1) but errant wedding vendors shouldn't be allowed to step foot into an exhibition booth in the first place.

(4) Orang dah baca or dengar pasal Enchanted Weddings but still want to have faith in them - for this one, all I can say is: You take the risk, you prepare for the fall.

Thank you Bride Barista, for breaking this unfortunate news here earlier this morning, updating me with all the deets and providing the above screenshots via Whatsapp. Pagi pagi Ahad dah kecoh pasal cerita orang kejam sebegini... benci!

To the pengantins and their families who were affected by this irresponsible and dishonest vendor, my heart goes out to you. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain, the loss, and the heartbreak this incident must have caused you but I hope God gives you the strength and will to get over it with much peace.

To everyone else... please, please, please be more careful when engaging wedding vendors and please do your research thoroughly. I can never stress this enough. Please.

  1. After my family member and partner had a bad experience with atira weddings i was like "diorang tak google ke"cos during that time I googled and tadah bad reviews. Sometines peiole get caught up with the wows and they just jump without checking for buaya. Those poor people. May Allah help them. Both the people affected and those sleazy wedding vendors. Sad that theyre doing this to fellow Muslims especially..

    1. ooh cherizsta bridal lagi satu... that one pun lepas dah pernah keluar suratkhabar terpampang, but still got people fall prey to them after that kan? so menggeramkan! and kesian all those pengantins who were affected, nobody deserves having to go through such heartache for their special day :(

but i guess dulu lagi worse because social media not as prevalent. with the rise of social media now, i hope people start using it for right purposes... for example, doing extensive research so they can avoid errant vendors!

you can refer to my 'Milestone Reads' under Vendors to Avoid (left side of this blog).

it's not exhaustive though, because these are the ones that i've heard of... not sure if there are others that are not widely publicized.

  7. Please beware of Dreamz photograpy by Khai. He is staying in woodlands. My event he did not record my nikah video. And claim he lost it. And some albums and picture also tk dpt. He was featured in berita harian on 2011. Some couples who are on the same boat w me reported. Please take note!!

  8. I really don't understand why ada BTBs yang still engage them despite of the numerous times they were featured in the news for not delivering what they should have.

Is this oblivion? Or like you said, masih nak "have faith" in them? Either way, I think this could have been avoided lah actually.

    1. i know what you mean! i was quite frustrated when i read about the latest incident.

would have been different if the owners tukar the company name or something. padahal the name is still the same, and yet people still fall into the same trap.

don't penalize the rest of the other good and trustworthy vendors just because of some suckers like this :/

  11. Here's a tip. Deposit 30%. Pay the remaining 70% in the morning of the majlis. You would have enough by yhen anyway. Full cash. That's what i'm doing. If the vendor don't accept, take your business elsewhere.

  12. Thanks for sharing, Farna! Actually kan.. when I was looking at the pictures and the video, I couldn't help but think... what happened to the things/barang dapur that were already there? And what actually happened? Cos it seemed like they did do a little set up, albeit merepek and the food macam ada sikit2... so what happened eh?

And yeah, asal lah orang2 ni tak google/research dulu.. hais.. susah2..

    1. apparently, the vendors set up everything the day before but when the morning of the wedding came, none of the food was cooked and nothing was properly prepared. so the pengantins pulled the plug. when asked, vendors said makanan busuk because exposed to rain or something. you can try catch a copy of berita harian yesterday - there's a front page article on this incident.

but what really *really* happened, wallahualam.

  13. Hello! This is just my personal point of view - Sometimes I feel that those who fell for EW trap are probably those who made more than 50% deposit way before they knew abt other pengantins got cheated. Or in this case, because the wife once worked with them, maybe she thought 'mustahil lah EW nak tipu kwn kerja sendiri.' Either or, the first article abt EW was just beginning of the year/end of last year? I mean, our Malay community is small enough to get the message to bakal pengantin.

Surely the convo will be like,
"Eh, you hire EW kan? Becareful tau, they cheat ppl's money."
"Betul ke? Alamak mcm mane eh? I dah made almost full payment dgn diorang."
The bakal pengantin kepala bengang one because both dont know whether 1) no choice but to still proceed and take risk or 2) find alternative. If choose the latter, duit lagi~ dah bertahun2 kumpul duit, deposit EW beribu ribu, ingatkan this month last ikat perot... terpaksa start from 0 balik. Orang nya susah pon kite tak tahu kan.

So in this case, I'm not blaming the pengantin why they never back up their plans, because till now EW CHOOSE to run away (latest info: Eejay going KL with family), hide & NEVER aplogize (so unprofessionalism).

Sorry for the lengthy comment. :)

    1. hello! no worries, greatly appreciate your two cents' worth on this :)

there is some truth in what you're saying, i do believe there are cases macam gitu. personally if that happened to me, i would have cut my losses and find alternatives, though. memang duit lagi, but at least majlis sempurna... then again it might be because i'm not a risk taker when it comes to such once-in-a-lifetime events. others might be more berani!

in any event, i agree with you - the vendors pun satu dol! very irresponsible, very unprofessional and i hope no other pengantins will have to suffer through the same fate *again*

  14. you know.. even for pengantin malas like me, i DO do research.. maybe not substantial tapi takkan lah tak percaya all those negative reviews that other brides posted kan. sigh. very kesian lah the couple. and the mak bapak. and the entire family. datang jauh-jauh, habuk pon takde. this EW pecah amanah and hancurkan masjid yang orang nak bina.. well only God will deal with them lah eh

    1. yes, exactly. sedikit sebanyak must read up a bit kan? i'd be so afraid to just blindly engage vendors and pay them thousands of dollars without at least knowing their reputation and background.

all the pengantins and families yang kena cheated by wedding vendors before memang semua very kesian. their supposedly happy occasion screwed by unscrupulous people... so traumatic :(

  15. sigh. everytime this happen to a new pengantin, my heart aches for them. and it was like right on the dot smlm, in the car after going romm, switched on the radio and the deejays were talking abt this. me, my dad and my fiance semua terdiam.

i hope the rest of the btbs and gtbs, survey around first before making any decision or taking their leap of faith. my prayers to the bride and groom and their families.

mcm my brutal mum ckp, "kalau jumpa org tu, pukul sampai mati" o.O brutal habes mak aku.
